I was just talking about this photo with its subject.
Next month this child turns seventeen, which is incredible to me. When I met him, about a year before this photo was taken, he was not even twelve yet. Now he is one of my nephews.
He and I were just talking about how I have never been able to "catch" him in a good photo. This one immediately came to mind. He didn't remember the photo, so I am posting it here to prove it to him.
As you can likely tell from his hand placement that he was trying to "hide" from me and my camera. But you can also likely tell from his "hidden" smile that it was a lovely little game of hide and seek we were playing.
It's hard to catch kids in a genuine smile when they are right in front of you, particularly when they are tweens and teens I've found. So whenever you can capture one, it is a treasure.
From a photography standpoint, I love this photo. I love that I opted to transform it to a black and white photo because the lines for his face, hand and hair are so crisp this way. I love the shadows created in this photo and the stark black and white contrast.
I'm sure he will have some kind of smarty-pants comment about me posting this, but it's worth it. I am so fortunate to get to spend my fifth summer with him and his lovely family. Sorry buddy!
